The short answer is: both. The adorable character Mokoko comes in multiple sizes, with 38cm and 17cm being two popular versions. Let's clear up the confusion and explore the different sizes and series of this collectible doll.
The 38cm Mokoko:
This is the larger, more huggable version. The first 38cm Mokoko was released on January 1, 2024, as part of the Close to Sweetseries, described as a large vinyl plush doll. Additionally, there is a 38cm Mokoko from the Fall into Springseries, also a large vinyl plush doll.
The 17cm Mokoko:
This smaller, highly collectible version was actually released first, on December 20, 2023. It also belongs to the Close to Sweetseries as a vinyl plush figure.
There's also a third, even smaller size. Outside the main vinyl plush line, Mokoko appears in a different series called Pin Wheel. Figures from the Pin Wheel series are only about 10cm tall.
To fully appreciate Mokoko, it helps to know its origin. Mokoko is part of the LABUBU family, which comes from the Nordic forest elf universe of "THE MONSTERS" trilogy of picture books. This beloved trilogy includes:
The Mystery of Buca
Pedro and the Maiden
Miro's Requiem
Each book tells its own independent story. The LABUBU tribe appears intermittently throughout the artwork and narratives, acting as charming cameo characters rather than being central to the main plots.
The 17cm size is especially popular among collectors, not least because most Mokoko figures are sold in "blind box" or "clamshell" packaging. The 17cm Mokoko has been released in a wide variety of themed series. To date, there are seven different series for the 17cm doll:
Close to Sweet
Fall into Spring
The Blue Diamond
Magic of Pumpkin
Twinkly Fairy Tale
Jump into Summer
Fall Into Sweaters
In summary, whether you're looking for a large 38cm cuddly companion or a collectible 17cm figure, Mokoko has you covered. With multiple series available for each size, building your own LABUBU family collection is a fun and rewarding hobby.
